Kolbe-Coloco beta tests ECOLEAF decoration

Kolbe-Coloco Spezialdruck GmbH, a German printer based in Versmold, has installed the first of a new metallization technology called ECOLEAF, for use on a narrow web label press. This sample shows ACTEGA’s Metal Print ECOLEAF metallization.

ECOLEAF was originally developed by Landa and first shown as Nano Metallography at Drupa 2016. Landa sold the technology to ALTANA’s ACTEGA Coatings & Sealants division in 2017. ALTANA used it as the basis of a new company, ACTEGA Metal Print, and has further developed the technology.

Conventional metal foiling leads to a great deal of waste as it involves cutting an image out of a sheet of foil and throwing away the unused part of the sheet. But ECOLEAF works by applying a thin layer of silver metallic flakes or pigments to a donor roller that is then applied to the image to create the decorative effect.

ALTANA CO2 Neutral by 2025

  • By 2025 the specialty chemicals group will reduce its CO2 impact from production and energy procurement to zero worldwide
  • Complete conversion to green electricity already in 2020
  • Call for significant strengthening of renewable energies

By 2025 the specialty chemicals group ALTANA will reduce its CO2 impact from production and energy procurement worldwide to zero. Already in 2020, the company’s entire power supply will be converted to renewable energies. ALTANA will compensate for the unavoidable use of natural gas until 2025 by financing equivalent climate protection projects in the regions where CO2 emissions are generated. The same applies to offsetting CO2 emissions arising from necessary business trips, company cars, and the transport of goods. The specialty chemicals group will thus achieve climate neutrality in its direct sphere of influence by 2025.

First Labelexpo, Then on to Drupa!

By Jan Franz Allerkamp

Our years of hard work are paying off and we’re getting ready to share with you the results at Labelexpo in Brussels this month. Through our engagements with label converters we’ve learned about the challenges this industry is facing and we have a much better understanding of how ECOLEAF can solve many of the current pain points with metallic embellishments.
We designed ECOLEAF to be flexible and its support for trigger images created with a variety of technologies is proving to have big dividends. Each printing method adds its own unique “benefits” to ECOLEAF’s metallization. The high precision of flexo-printed trigger images and ECOLEAF’s precise application of metallic pigments creates embellishments with extraordinary resolution and the finest of details. When using digital technology for the trigger image, ECOLEAF can create seamless metallization since there are no plate gaps.

Making 2019 a Landmark Year

By Jan Franz Allerkamp

After we have successfully moved our entire team into the new building, I’m very excited to announce that Dario Urbinati will round out the executive team of ACTEGA Metal Print as the new Chief Sales & Marketing Officer (CSMO). Dario brings 12 years of narrow web and packaging experience with Gallus and Omet where he helped build-up new product platforms and developed new channels for sales, service and distribution. Dario is the perfect CSMO and will help us strike the right balance between R&D and Sales & Marketing. Dario comes with a lot of persistence, creativity and the enthusiasm of a high-class sales manager who will complement our small, currently R&D-driven company very well and ensure that we deliver products that are needed by our customers. His experience as a regional Managing Director for Gallus and Omet is exactly what we need as we build our business, e.g. finding the right (regional) sales channels. 2018 was a year of engaging the market and hard work.

5 Questions with Dario Urbinati, CMSO

Dario Urbinati has 12 years’ experience in the print industry, most recently serving as the Managing Director of Omet Asia Pacific where he was responsible for the turnaround of the business in China, including the expansion of the distribution and sales channels. Prior to Omet, Dario was the Managing Director of Gallus in Southeast Asia where he led and expanded direct and indirect sales and service activities. He grew sales across multiple product lines throughout the region and was responsible for a P&L that included equipment, consumables and services. Now with ACTEGA Metal Print, Dario will be based in the Lehrte office and commute to work from Switzerland—when he’s not visiting customers or partners.
